Our long postponed ‘Christmas’ party finally took place at Malton and Norton Rugby Club on 15th July. The Lions, assisted by the Rotary Club arranged for our senior citizen guests to be collected and dropped off. There was a heart warming buzz of happy chatter as the Malton residents eagerly flooded into the clubhouse.  In fact, many were waiting outside half an hour before the advertised start time!

The event included a welcome from Ian Conlan, the new Mayor of Malton, who was accompanied by his second in command, Lindsay Burr. They joined the residents for their two-course roast dinner, beautifully prepared by Lana and her team at the rugby club. Many thanks to Chris Rushworth for her help setting up the event. Dinner was served by the light-footed Lions – there seemed to be one or two who had hidden talents and managed to carry 3 desserts at a time!

Live music followed, from the very popular Steve Cassidy, who generously donated his time to entertain this lively gathering who joined in with some well-known classics.

All guests were given a raffle ticket to win one of three hampers of goodies. One kind winner shared her prize with her fellow table guests.

Three games of bingo concluded the evening. Eamonn Wall undertook calling duties – with cash prizes to be won, the games were taken very seriously, and you could feel the tension in the room.

As the evening came to a close, there were many compliments from our guests who declared that they’d had a great time. Thank you to Malton Town Council for their generous grant which helped pay for the event. Seeing people together again after a couple of difficult years was a fantastic reward for the Lions who gave their time.
